I miss all my Marathon Mommy friends! Some of you I have found on Instagram so it has been fun to keep up with you that way. I would love to see this blog active again and find out what all of you are training for and how life has been.

My current plan is to run the Oregon Marathon on September 13th, 2014. Any of you who live at high elevations would do well to run a race at low elevations- ask my awesome sister in law Kristyn!

There is a full and a half option. Would love to see some of you there. 17 weeks away- perfect amount of time to train and enjoy the longer days and lighter sky!

I hope you all are doing well!Kelly(M&M)http://www.blogger.com/profile/10667877708280021302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19163408.post-23367178254986985052013-11-25T14:06:00.001-08:002013-11-26T13:02:49.291-08:00Meetup in Utah!Hi Ladies! I know this blog has been fairly inactive, but I am ready to get it going again! I am training for a marathon in April and would love more support. This Friday I will be running in Utah with a good friend who runs with me here. (Annie!) If anyone else would like to join us, please comment here and then email me at kelmarker (at) gmail dot com

We will set a time and place. It will be north of Salt Lake. We did this a few years ago and loved it!

I hope this finds you all well! I would love to hear what you are all training for!

Edited to add- I realized that Friday will be better for me to meet up than Saturday. This might not work for you crazy Black Friday shoppers!Kelly(M&M)http://www.blogger.com/profile/10667877708280021302noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19163408.post-12530176732992146502013-07-24T21:37:00.002-07:002013-07-24T21:37:55.367-07:00Nike+ appI've started using the Nike+ Running app on my iPhone when I run. Are you using it? There's lots of great information about your runs and you can link up with friends to encourage each other. If you're using it, friend me! I love seeing what others are doing -- it always inspires me!! If you're not using, what are you waiting for??cherlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06385659910370689653noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19163408.post-69028929793272459492013-06-28T20:58:00.000-07:002013-06-28T20:59:53.855-07:00NIKE Women's Marathon in San Francisco!I'm in! I can hardly believe it, but I received my confirmation e-mail this morning - and I'm in! I will be running in the NIKE Women's Marathon in San Francisco on October 20th! This was my third year entering the lottery that everyone has told me "you only get in if you do the Team in Training program". But, the third time's a charm proved them wrong! And I finally get to run this and cross it off my bucket list! Can you tell I'm just a wee bit excited?? !!!!!!!!cherlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06385659910370689653noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19163408.post-66508203341342562532013-06-27T11:09:00.001-07:002013-06-27T11:09:17.491-07:00the marathon I haven't trained forYes, you read the title right. I'm running a marathon that I haven't trained for. I ran the Eugene (Oregon - is there another?!) Marathon awhile ago... maybe six weeks? I signed up for the July 4th Foot Traffic Flat Marathon (Portland, OR) probably six weeks earlier when training was going well and I thought I could simply piggy back onto my Eugene training and run a second good race. I'm now exactly one week out. Training has pretty much gone out the window as other things have taken priority. And I'm scared. It's going to be a warm day and if I recall correctly, there is very little to absolutely zero shade on this course. And I don't recall much wind so I can't count on any relief there. It's going to be a very hot and long 26.2 miles for me.

Anyone else run a marathon with no real training? Sure, my fitness level is probably fine. I did a modified recovery after Eugene and have some longer runs under my belt these last few weeks. But only one was a 20 miler due to time constraints. When you run a 9:00 pace like me, it takes a pretty good chunk of time to run 20+ miles. I just couldn't find those blocks.

It was weird to finish my 20 miler and know I was now "tapering"... yet, I hadn't really topped out. Oh, I'll finish the marathon but it's not going to be a good one.

Of course, I'm already thinking about the next one...cherlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06385659910370689653noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19163408.post-76296837135023344492013-03-22T22:41:00.003-07:002013-03-22T22:57:58.547-07:00Marathon 2013 Dreams- The Oregon MarathonHi everyone! In a little over 3 days I will be having a baby. That means it's time to plan my races for the year. :-) That is what keeps me sane after I have a baby. Plus, I am antsy to get back out and exercise after taking a few months off.

So, it is perfect timing to find out about the new Oregon Marathon. This is a race that is put on by Uberthons. I have participated in many of their races and their timing system is unbelievable!!

http://www.uberthons.com/theoregonmarathon

Tomorrow is a one day price of $75 to register. After that, it will be $90. Who is in? Oregon is a beautiful place to run and the weather should be perfect. If you are coming from a higher altitude, then you will have quite the advantage.

Let me know if you sign up. Sarah, you better sign up! :-)

I would love to hear what other races you are all training for and excited about. Let's get this blog going again. I need motivation!
First off, my cute husband, Jeff will be running his very first marathon- woo hoo! Also coming is Annie, who I met through this blog and is now one of my close friends and she is going to rock St George!! There are a bunch of other men coming from Oregon to run also. We have all been training together (well, me somewhat training- I have had a few setbacks!) by running down a mountain every week. We hope it will get us ready for the downhill. I am most excited to see my long lost running buddy, the famous Suziepetunia! She is currently living in Utah and is meeting us in St George. Oh, how I have missed her and I can't wait to catch up!
So, who will be joining us for this awesome race? I love the St George Marathon. It will be my 3rd time running it and my 10th marathon!
What is everyone else training for?
Kelly(M&M)http://www.blogger.com/profile/10667877708280021302noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19163408.post-69519377417115151202012-07-11T15:00:00.001-07:002012-07-11T15:01:19.605-07:00Still here! Are you running?? I totally dropped the ball on the weekly mileage posts. Actually, all blogging has ceased since we moved last month. My home computer is sitting in the corner of our little condo and I haven't been able to upload pictures to any blogs on my iPad so I'm taking a break.
The first few weeks here running also took a break. I didn't have any workout clothes so I wore my husband's clothes for a week. Yes, that was quite the sight so I limited myself to running in the wee hours of the morning so few would see me.
The second week some of our boxes arrived so I now have running clothes, my Garmin, etc. yet, running was still tough after several weeks off from regular running. But I feel things changing! I was able to run just under 8 miles earlier this week and today's 4.5 miler was quick and easy. It feels so good to be running again!
Tomorrow night I'll join the local running group for a fun run. It's going to be deathly hot but I need to find some new running partners. Any of you in Corvallis, Oregon??
I have no races planned, at the moment, but am leaning towards running CIM (Sacramento) again in December. It was such a great event and weekend -- and best of all, my running peeps from Carlsbad, Calif. will meet me there.cherlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06385659910370689653noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19163408.post-87067805856560538682012-06-18T13:10:00.003-07:002012-06-18T13:10:29.099-07:00Monday Miles: 6/11 - 6/17How was your week? Apparently, I like it! :-) I love that it is my altitude and I commented that it is like an old friend to me. It was my first marathon in 2005. I had a baby in October 2004 and needed a goal to get me exercising through the winter. Somehow I decided running a marathon was the answer. I had a fantastic training cycle. I followed Hal Higdon's beginner program to the "t" and never missed a day of running. I was constantly amazed by my ability to complete each new distance. I trusted Mr. Higdon. I had a great 20 miler and felt fantastic going into the race. All my training miles were around a 10minute pace. My thought was that I would finish in 4:30. I did my first mile at 8:50 and just kept going at that pace. I felt good and thought I would be fine. Unfortunately, by mile 7 this speed caught up with me and my lungs and heart rebelled. I had to run/walk the last 19 miles- finishing in 5:11. 2:10 for the first half and 3 hours for the second half. I was so disappointed because it was not what I expected. Luckily, I realized that I could do better than that and I learned a lot from my experience. Mostly, not to start out at what you haven't trained for!

7 years and 8 marathons later, my personal best is a 3:48 (run in Newport in 2008). This year, I had a miscarriage in January and was devastated. I handled my disappointment by signing up for the Newport Marathon on February 1st. I had almost 18 weeks to train- a full training cycle. I knew it would be the thing to get me out of bed. (Some mornings I crawled back under the covers after my run, but at least I could do something. )

I knew my friend Stephanie was training for her first so I would have someone to run with. I also ran with my friend, Kirsten, because she was doing low heart rate training, which was the speed I needed! It was not my easiest training cycle and I had some setbacks, but I did not give up. I tried speedwork a couple of times, but my body said no so I decided to stick with Stephanie and help her have a positive first marathon experience.

We went to Newport with Steph, Kirsten, another good friend Annie and her sister Mary (who was also running her first), and one of my close friends, Heather, who was going to be my driver after the marathon. :-) We stopped by the Outlets on the way down and had some relaxing shopping time without kids. We had a great dinner at an Italian restaurant and went back to the condo. We discussed race strategy and I again committed to running with Stephanie and just hoped I could keep up. I planned on sending her ahead if at any point she felt stronger than I.

The weather was misty- perfect racing conditions! We started out at our goal 10 minute pace. We kept that up for the first 16 miles. Mary, Steph and I were just chatting and enjoying the run. At this point, Mary and Steph were starting to feel pain in their hips. I could tell by Steph's facial expression that she was not doing well. Her family had just met up with us, so she walked with her husband for a while. Mary and I ran together for a little bit and she seemed to be feeling strong so at about mile 18 I encouraged her to go ahead and finish her race. She was hesitant to leave, but she felt good so she went ahead. Steph and I joined up and for the rest of the run Steph would run until she could no longer handle the daggers in her knees and hips, and would walk for a little bit to ease the pain for a moment. I was so impressed with her tenacity. We kept chatting and listened to music for part of it, but overall we just hung in together. At around mile 24, both my knees started aching. I began to look forward to the walk breaks. :-) Steph could feel the end close and we ran the last mile in. It was a very satisfying finish, and I felt very emotional as I relived some of my other memories from the course. We met up with our other friends and shared our stories.

I sure love the friendships that running has brought me.

I am grateful that my body cooperated enough to let me train for this marathon. It was exactly what I needed to get through these past 4 months. Now I look forward to training for St. George with my husband Jeff. It is his first marathon and I am excited for him to experience some of the emotions I have had over these last 7 years. Boston is still my ultimate goal. :-)
I ran a 4:06:00. My personal best for the marathon is 4:05:04 -- yes, I was just under a minute from getting a new PR. It was heartbreaking to know I was doing the best I could do and still wouldn't get a new PR.

Last week I ran a local 5K. I ran a 23:02. My personal best for the 5K is 22:50 - yes, just 13 seconds off from a new PR. I hadn't planned to run it hard but when I saw how close I was in that last stretch, I gave it all I had. Again, heartbreaking to know I was almost there.

These were probably the closest I've been to not getting a new PR. What about you? Let's hear your stories!
We've all overheard people talk about the "marathon" they just ran, only to later learn it was not 26.2 miles but something less. Brace yourselves, here comes the snobby runner in me... A MARATHON is only a MARATHON if the distance is 26.2 MILES. That's it. Period. End of discussion. If you run any other distance, it is not a marathon. If you run 13.1 miles in a half marathon event, you did not run a marathon. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but a half marathon isn't the same experience as a marathon and you cannot call it one. It simply isn't. The distance isn't "half the effort". The marathon is not "twice as hard". It really bothers me when people claim to have completed a marathon when they haven't.

A friend recently posted on Facebook that she had run a marathon that morning. It was her first running event and she was super excited and pleased with herself for finishing -- and she should be. Any running event (or other athletic endeavor) should be applauded. However, to call it a marathon when it wasn't 26.2 miles?? Come on, people! A few days later she posted again on Facebook that she's now addicted to marathons and looking for another one to do. I hate to look up people's times because it really doesn't matter, but I was curious just what she did. It wasn't a marathon. It wasn't even a half marathon. She ran a "quarter marathon". Sheesh! Who came up with that one!?

Yes, I'm a running snob. My friends are running snobs, too. Not because we feel superior to anyone else (you all know I'm not a fast runner or a great runner for that matter) but because we've experienced the marathon. We know the time that it takes to properly prepare and train for a marathon. We know the commitment that a marathon requires not only from ourselves, but from our families. We know the mental games one faces when the later miles get tough. We know the physical things that happen to our bodies whether they be blisters, lost toe nails, chafing or more serious problems. We know that a marathon will change a person. It changes how you approach life, how you solve problems, how you view the world around you. You are not the same person after a marathon. It's impossible. The marathon is such an incredible experience that it changes you all the way to your core.

So don't tell me about your "marathon" when what you really did was a little more than a 10K. Respect the distance. Respect the time, work, and devotion that a runner has who covers 26.2 miles. It isn't a cake walk, nor do we want it to be.

Want to hear my thoughts on "jogging" versus "running"...??
We went with a big group and there was no pressure and I was just happy to finish and happened to PR by 30 minutes. Not too shabby. :-)

2nd St George was in 2010. We went with a big group again and this time I was trained to qualify for Boston (or so I thought!). Unfortunately the weather was about 20 degrees warmer than it was in '07 and my body could not keep up the pace. I was extremely disappointed and took a break from marathons. (This was my 8th marathon!). Decided instead to try for a baby. I got pregnant, but miscarried in January of this year. A week after the miscarriage, I signed up for the Newport Marathon. I knew I needed something to get me motivated to lose weight and to keep my mind off my disappointment. So, here I am, 3 weeks away from a marathon and I just signed up for another one. Am I crazy or what?! I never thought I would do St George again, but peer pressure, (and remembering that it really is a great marathon!) sucked me in!

I am excited to do this one with a group this year, especially since Suziepetunia will be joining us from Texas and my sweet husband suprised me and signed up and it will be his first marathon.
Last weekend my 5 year old daughter, my pointer dog and myself cheered on our friends as they ran the La Jolla (Calif.) Half Marathon. I haven't watched many races and had forgotten how much fun they are to watch. We had intended to watch from three spots along the course but ended up watching the runners from two spots. The first was about 1.5 miles into the race where the runners come up a hill and make a left onto Pacific Coast Highway/101. The second was near mile 5 after the runners have run through hilly Del Mar, Calif. and are beginning a nice long descent before the brutal climb up and through Torrey Pines National Park. I know this route well as my runs often taken me down there and sometimes when I'm feeling particularly crazy, I'll run the Torrey Pines hill. It's a killer and to hit that at mile 6 of a half marathon is tough. Usually the weather is warm and many people slow to a walk on that hill. In the past, runners have had serious health complications on that hill. This year, however, the marine layer was thick and provided a perfect morning for running.

There were many things I loved about watching this race. Cheering on friends was definitely #1. But what I wasn't expecting were all the cheers and comments we received! Runners are such a friendly, happy group and those running La Jolla were no exception. High fives, nods of appreciation, nice comments, hoots, laughs, smiles and lots of people telling us how many toenails they've lost. It was really fun to be out there supporting these runners!

I taped the course map on the back of our sign, noting approximate times of my friends along the course. Also on the back was this BINGO card I printed from the Competitor.com website. My daughter enjoyed waving her pom poms but it also helped to have her look for these runner's descriptions on the Bingo card. http://running.competitor.com/2011/10/out-there/out-there-marathon-bingo_40298
The following was sent to me by a courageous mom who wanted to share her message of hope.
- Suzie Petunia

I still remember hearing for the first time that I had
cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma. I was only 36 years
old, and I had just given birth three months earlier to my
one child, my only child. Is it any wonder that thoughts ran
through my head of giving up, or asking God, "why?" I could
have wallowed in self pity or cursed God's name on that day,
November 21, 2005. I had never expected such a diagnosis.
Because of my new daughter, this should have been the
happiest time of my life.

I couldn't quit; I was always the optimist. I couldn't curse
God or cry out and ask why. People say I always see through
rose colored glasses. I had to fight this disease head on,
had to fight as any new mother would. I had to fight for my
life, had to be there to raise my young daughter.

It is true cancer can be the worst thing that has ever
happened to someone, but many sufferers say it can be a
double-edged sword. It actually can be a good in some ways.
Actually my life is better, not worse, because I have
mesothelioma. It has been good because I choose not to be a
victim.

I decided instead of wallowing in self pity to help others. I
would make light of this situation. If I did not look on this
as dreadful, fear would evaporate. Because the first thing
people lose when they hear they have mesothelioma is hope, I
wanted to give that hope back to them.

Although my situation may have seemed dreadful, I determined
to find good in it. The world's leading specialist in
fighting mesothelioma was able to give me hope that I could
win.

Even though mesothelioma treatment is not someting to make
light of, we had to find ways to keep our spirits up. My
tumor was no longer just a tumor, but Punxsutawney Phil,
because Groundhog’s Day in 2006 was the day it was to be
removed. Groundhog's Day was Lungleavin Day, named because
that's when my lung left. Every year we now celebrate
Lungleavin Day with a party, to celebrate life, to celebrate
conquering fear, to celebrate the good that came from a bad
situation. On a day that some might see as sad, we celebrate
hope.

If I had never had cancer I would never have met many of the

strong, amazing, wonder people I know. These are some of the
most passionate and tough people I’ve ever met. They also
have mesothelioma, and they are warriors. They want others to
know of the disease that many only know of from a commercial
on daytime TV. They are sons, daughters, wives and husbands,
my friends. I now have much more purpose in life in helping
others.
