plagued with injuries

Sigh.

Months ago (last summer?) I registered my husband and myself for the LA Marathon.  My husband then developed some sort of respiratory issue that the oncologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, and many others still haven't figured out.  His next appointment is in two weeks.  We think it's directly related to stress.  He has a difficult time taking a full breath and often feels short of breath.  If he's feeling particularly stressed, it's much worse.  Very scary stuff so he knew several months ago that he would be unable to run LA.

About six weeks ago a local friend that I run with every Saturday said she'd do it with me.  I gave her a great deal on the entry and told her I'd drive (we're two hours away) and pay for the hotel.  She's recently started to complain about soreness in her big toe so yesterday she saw a podiatrist.  She has a broken bone inside her toe; he advised 4 to 6 weeks of no running.

Ack!

Sure, I've run many races by myself.  Aren't they often done by yourself even if you are with a friend anyway?  Last spring I drove 90 minutes in the wee hours of the morning to run a marathon by myself.  Although it wasn't local, the race was in Newport Beach (CA) so it's pretty safe there.

But a hotel in downtown Los Angeles?  I've booked the host hotel so I know there will be a lot of runners and we're shuttled to the start and then back to the hotel after the race... but I still don't like the idea of going by myself.

I've got a couple of friends in mind who I think could jump in and be ready at this point.  Remember, it's three weeks away at this point.  But if they can't, I don't know what to do.

What would you do?

LA Marathon: There's Still Time!

I found this SIX week marathon training plan on the LA Marathon website.  Wow.  I think this plan basically gets someone across the finish line but I'm not sure what kind of shape that person would be in when they finished.  Still, it's an interesting plan and if you have nothing to do on March 18th, come join me in LA!  I've heard great things about this course -- sounds like a fun 26.2 mile tour of LA, starting at Dodger Stadium (inland) and ending at the Santa Monica Pier.  Fabulous!

Virtual Run for Sherry Arnold: February 11, 2011

I think we've all heard the terrible story of Sherry Arnold.  She's the teacher in Montana who went for a run and never came home.  Did you know there is a Virtual Run for Sherry Arnold today?  Print out a bib and go for a run.  I found it empowering when I went out for a long run by myself this morning.

Looking for Great Marathon? Try Newport!

I was trying to get excited about training for a half marathon, but my true love is the marathon. I know something is wrong with me, but I just crave distance! I look forward to the long runs, and even joined one of my friends for an 18 miler when I wasn't trained for it. I wouldn't suggest that, but I love the new scenery that a longer run brings. Sometimes, I just get tired of the same 5 mile loops. So, I decided to sign up for the Newport Marathon. I would love for others to join me. I have run it 3 times. It was my first marathon and later became my PR marathon. Here is what I love about it:

1. Spring marathon- I love that it keeps me training through the winter.
2. Weather- Very mild temperature- usually in the 50's
3. Elevation- It's at the beach- so zero elevation. All of you that are at higher elevation would feel much better running at the coast!
4. Course- At mile 5 it becomes an out and back along the bay, very pretty view. Fairly flat with one hill that you go over at mile 5 and mile 26.
5. It is one of the top Boston Qualifiers. (Someday for me!)
6. Small- 900 people

To be fair, I will list the drawbacks:
1. I would prefer a point to point.
2. Coming back feels slightly uphill, but I am not sure if this is just because I am tired.
3. Not much crowd support because it is hard to get to the course. Half of the road is closed off.
4. I have not loved my race shirts, but the last one was finally a tech shirt. :-)

So, if you are looking for a race, come join me on June 2nd. Oregon is beautiful!

It is filling up fast!

What other races are you ladies running? I would love to keep a running list on the side again! Good luck!
