A COLD 5K Turkey Trot

I got to run a 5K Turkey Trot with my good friend Rebecca on Thanksgiving morning. This was her first race and we have had so much fun training for it. I was really concerned about the weather. It was SOOOOOOO cold! At the start of the race it was 5 degrees. Thank goodness for underarmour and a scarf wrapped around my face. Here's a video of me high-fiving the turkey at the finish line. It was a FUN, FUN, FUN day even in the cold.

I love me a good, cold turkey trot! I did one, too. But I love that you have video of you high-fiving the turkey. Very cute!

Brrr! What state are you in (of the 50, I mean)? I am very impressed. I'm not sure I would have been up for a 5 degree run. :)

We are in S.E. Idaho. My outside training days may be over for a few months. It's just too cold.

Very cute video!! I am not too excited about running back in Oregon in the cold, dark rain now that I have been running in Cali. But, I will think of you running in 5 degree weather and I will try not to be a wimp. :-)

Hey team Hanni I am also in Southern Idaho. I ran on Thanksgiving morning but it wasn't that cold here in Twin Falls. It was nice to run off some of my morning sickness!

I'm so glad I happened upon Marathon Mommy. I ran my first marathon in Disney 2005. It was the hardes thing I've ever done but soo rewarding. I convinced some friends and my hubby to run a half marathon this Spring. RUN FREE OR DIE!!! (A New Hampshire thing)

roxanne,

Seriously, does running cure your morning sickness??? I am so sick when I am pregnant - I want to hear more about your running while pregnant. How fun that you are not to far from us. We are west of Rexburg in Terreton. Our run was in Idaho Falls on Thursday. Way to go for getting out and doing your run!

calibosmom - way to go on your half. We're all planning to meet in SLC this spring - it is a fabulous half marathon! Which one are you planning to do?

M & M - There is no way I would have run Thursday morning, had I not committed to run with my friend. That's the great thing about having running buddies, isn't it? It keeps me motivated because I know she'll be there waiting to go.

Team Hanni,
This is what I have noticed this week running while pregnant:

On Monday I ran 4 miles on my treadmill and spent most of the time talking myself into stopping early. I ended up doing the four miles I had planned but it wasn't pretty. I ran slower than I usually do (I usually run 8 1/2 min. miles on a treadmill but had to kick it down to 9 1/2 so a whole minute) and just figured making the distance is all that I care about. One interesting thing is that it usually takes me about a mile to warm up and feel like I am getting into a grove. Now it takes at least two.

On Thanksgiving I ran 4 1/2 miles and I actually felt really good. The fresh air makes a big difference. I wore my forerunner and averaged 9.4 min miles. The biggest change during a run is my breathing. I am using a lot more oxygen so I breath harder than on a normal run. This is a big adjustment because I am big on breathing and guaging my run with how I am breathing. I can still talk while running it just takes a little more effort.

As far as the morning sickness I really think it makes a difference if I run or go spinning. I have noticed that it takes the edge off a little. It my no means cures that horrible feeling but it seems to tone it down a bit. The hard part is getting up the motivation to get going, especially when my body feels really tired and weak. I have stratigically set it up that I have friends depending on me to show up and that way I can't back out as easily. It is hard to get up at 5:30 in the morning to run in the freezing cold and darkness but I always know that I will feel better. My running partner was out of town this week so it was a big test for me to see how motivated I could be on my own. I ended up running only about 10 mile this week, spinning once and attending my weight class. This is not the best but I figure it is good enough considering this has been my sickest week so far.
I have noticed that the more I think about being sick the worse I feel, so I have tried to keep busy and distract myself from it. It was sad to have Thanksgiving and not enjoy any of the food. If this pregnancy is the same as my others I have until Christmas (end of December) until I start feeling better so I am hoping to keep on keeping on. I hope this makes sence and gives you an idea of what you will be dealing with if you run while pregnant.

Roxanne,

Thank you for your details! I think you should do a regular weekly post on pregnancy running. The ups and downs and how you are doing.

You are amazing!!!

I'd love to run in SLC but I live in New Hampshire. My family lives there and if I find myself out there this spring I'll join you. We are running the Great Bay and possibly the Big Lake 1/2s.
