Diary of a Bad Run.....

So it is starting to get cold here (really cold), but I set out this morning as prepared as I could to get in a good run (10 miles). I had a nice new "winter" running outfit, headwarmer and everything... I had noticed that the sky looked a little black, but it wasn't raining or even windy..so I thought I would be ok...
Everything was going great until I was about 5 miles from home...That was when I saw (and heard) the first huge lightning strike...it was followed by a couple more...and then almost instantly it started to hail-hard! I started to try to figure out what I should do...my husbands office was about a half mile away...so I decided that I would try to get there...That didn't work-the wind started going really crazy and I finally made my way to refuge under the roof of a car wash...
Thankfully, I had my cell phone and called my husband (who was at home-not at work anyway) to come and get me. By the time I actually got home, I found that this little storm had blown down most of the mailboxes on our street and knocked over a tree in my neighbors backyard and the power had been out...but I was glad to be home and finished the rest of my run on my treadmill (thank goodness for treadmills!)
I'm just wondering if anyone out there has any great advice on how they train during the miserable winter months??? I am doing a couple of 1/2 marathons in the next few months and planning on doing the Salt Lake Marathon in the spring...so I know that I need to train hard through the winter-no matter what the weather brings!!!

Yikes with the hail!

We trained all winter to run SLC last year, and while there were days that had bad weather every once in a while, the majority of the winter days were beautiful! My advice is just to wear the right gear, and watch the wx report. My favorite days to run are the mornings after a big snowstorm.

You totally could've ended up in Oz running with the actual munchkins.

You probably won't have a storm like that again (I hope) - and it sounds like you took the best piece of gear with you - your cell phone. (Look at how smart you were.)
