Natalie has a question

Hi there, I can't find anything out there to support this but do you think, or know of, any cases where a heart rate monitor gets wonky while you're pregnant? My last two runs my heart rate has jumped to insane #'s and then dropped right back to normal #'s just as fast, and yet I'm not out of breath or tired. Is there any chance it's picking up my baby's heart rate? Or is my heart rate monitor just broken?

thank you,
natalie

Natalie adds that she suspects this is impossible, but it has only started happening since she has been pregnant. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Are any of you heart monitor experts? Let's help a gal out. :)

I never used a monitor while pregnant, but I had weird heart things happening. Do you feel a moment of extra hard heart pounding, then it subsides? (I don't know how else to describe it). According to my doc, pregnancy brings increased blood volume and he said it isn't uncommon to have the heart things I was, but he also recommended I lay off the running.

But maybe your monitor is whacked too. :)

I never used a monitor, either, but I could definitely feel my heart rate jump and pound really hard. When I felt that, I would usually just slow down and walk. Or I would cross-train and ride the bike. Good luck! I admire you!

I've had similar things happen with my heart rate monitor. It was too new for it to be a battery dieing. It would be reading normally and then suddenly shoot up to 190+. It turns out, it wasn't on tight enough (it's the type with a strap that goes around your chest). Maybe your pregnant body's changing shape is interfering with your monitor fitting correctly?

I don't think my heart rate is actually jumping as I'm not feeling any pounding or anything? I'm breathing normally, I can talk, I'll even check my pulse with my finger and it seems fine? But it'll go from a 150 to suddenly 190 or 200, but then immediately drop again. If it stayed at those levels I'd stop, but it's the "jumping" that's so weird. I wonder if anonymous is onto something with the fit...

thanks ladies!

I haven't ever used a heart monitor, but I read a newspaper article that mentioned this.
I suspect the monitor is picking up your baby's heart rate. Here is a link to an article that talks about using monitors. About half way in the lady talks about how being 7 months pregnant impacts her readings. http://www.standard.net/live.php/167797?printable=story Good luck!

Hi Natalie! I'm just 10 weeks pregnant but I set my HR limit on my Garmin and no matter HOW SLOW I am going, it's always beeping, when I set it at 140 for the max. I put it at 160 and it's much better. But, I jogged 4 miles and my stomach felt like I had contractions, and so I've just stuck with the elliptical. Good luck, I hope that helps!
