Newport Marathon

OK reading the posts others made about Newport I thought I would add my own. First off for everyone telling me this was a flat course there were more hills than I expected. Drove the course the day before. The plan was to run the whole time with my friend Shauna. Once the gun went off she was off. She went out so fast I knew there was no way I was running with her. I knew I had to keep my heartrate within reason. I started running a steady pace around 8:20. That work great I was around that pace give or take 20 seconds all through the turnaround. When mile 20 hit my brain was trying to tell me to stop but the legs kept going. I did start slowing around 8:40's. Last two miles were 9:00 miles. I was hoping to get 3:40 but my official finishing time was 3:41:10. I was happy with that time. I took 4 minutes off my time for a PR. It was great seeing other mommies on the course. Thanks for the cheers and encouragement.

That is something to be really proud of. Just curious what your typical half, 5 or 10k is? It sounds like we might have similar paces. I'm still trying to figure out and gauge a finish time for the St. George this year. This will be my first race I actually am training for and not just showing up on a whim and a prayer!

Nice job on the PR! I love how you make that pace sound so easy. : ) Glad I got to see you running the other way.

That's a VERY good time, a BQ perhaps? I agree that the course really does have a lot more hills than their slogan "flat and fast" would indicate. Near as I can tell with Google Maps it's 550 total feet of up then down. Aren't those first 2.5 miles with all those turns, rough surfaces (I tripped and almost fell) and short, steep hills really screwy? Still, I liked Newport a lot.
