"Go Mommy!"

This morning I veered from my Portland Marathon training to participate in the Seafair Sprint Triathlon. I love doing Tri’s but it is pretty difficult to fit them into marathon training schedules. As I was finishing the 5K and nearing the finish line my eyes were drawn to all the little people standing around, and sitting around in strollers, yelling their little hearts out, “Go Mommy!” “Good job Mommy!” “Yay, that’s my mom!” It literally brought tears to my eyes. I could blame it on my burning legs, my throbbing bottom, or my rubbing swim suit, but really I would only be fooling myself, and why? These kids are so proud of their mommies (and daddies too but hey this is Marathon Mommies after all). And they should be!

So for all you mommies out there making it happen, training every day, every other day, three times a week, or when ever and taking 3 hours for that LONG run or 30 minutes because it is literally all you have, GREAT JOB! What more could a kid ask for? An awesome mom who gets out there and busts her behind! I run so that I can be healthy. To be honest when I get my run in I feel like such a better mom, I am less cranky and I have more energy. And most of all I love the example that I am setting for my son, and for the kids that will follow him someday. My silly, nearly four year old CAN’T WAIT until he can do a tri. He has already completed his first 1K and was begging to do a race this morning. Healthy lifestyles don’t just happen, they are learned and we are setting our children up for long and healthy lives. And that makes me proud, proud of me and proud of all of you!

So next time you run across that finish line just listen to all those little voices out there cheering for their mommies! And I am sure one of those little voices is cheering for you.

Happy running!

I agree! I love those signs I see in road races that are placed somewhere random along the course that just read "go mommy" or "I am proud of you mom" and even though you know they aren't from your kids, you do in some way feel they are and they push you to the end.

Thanks for the post....and AWESOME JOB girl! congrats!

Thanks for the encouragement...I know that I always hope that my kids will learn something from my running. Great job on the Tri and good luck with your marathon training too!

I'm relatively new to running, and my second race ever was a half marathon. I was emotionally overcome by all the kiddos camped out in their jammies and strollers, holding signs for their Mommies and cheering loudly. It was so great to see, so I've decided when I run my first Marathon in October, I want my kids to be part of it. It just doesn't get any better than having the support of your most adoring fans!

What a great post. Thanks for the reminder that what we're doing is so worthwhile! I'm inspired by your triathlon. I haven't conquered that yet. someday. Congrats!
