Question?

I have recently had baby #3 and i have never ran while nursing before. I am in need of some advice from you Mommies out there! Does running while nursing cut back on your milk supply? Do you just need to make sure and stay hydrated? While i am nursing i'm just planning on doing short runs. I have a goal of running a 5k in September. I have missed running the past 10 months, it feels great to be back to normal again and start running :)

i had heard that exercise in general lowered your supply so i never did it, but i would love to hear of moms who did and how it went

Every baby is different, so you never know (at least with mine.) I was able to run after babies #2 and #3 w/o any problems. But I had major problems with my milk supply with baby #4. Thanks to some great advice from fellow moms from this site, they helped me build my supply back. What worked best for me was to take fenugreek, 2 pills 3x a day, and I also drank the 'mothers milk' tea. I would just make a large mug of it, put it in the fridge and drink it throughout the day. Also, drinking tons of water helps. I suggest to start running, take it easy, and count your baby's diapers. Good luck!!!

I ran 1/2 marathons and a triathalon while nursing with both my 2nd and 3rd with no problems. If you do have a problem google "galactagogues". These are substances that you can take to help your increase milk supply.

I am running my 3rd half marathon of the year in a few weeks, my son is 13 months, and I'm still nursing. I'm gonna quite soon because I wanted to after he turned 1, but I haven't noticed a decrease in my milk supply. (My son's been in the 100th percentile since he was 6 months.) I think I make whipping cream. I've heard sometimes infants can be turned off by the increase in lactic acid in your milk, but I haven't had a problem. Everyone's different so I hope nursing while running works for you. Just wanted to give you a success story.:)

alot of my friends can't excercise while nursing because it causes a lack of supply to their milk. however my #2 is 5 months old and i've done a sprint triathlon and 2 10k's since he was born and i've been totally fine. he's a chunky kid getting plenty of milk. i do however get light headed sometimes while running and i think it's because he's sucking everything out of me aswell as the excercise. so for me (everyones different) i was still able to produce the milk with the water i was drinking but if i didn't want myself to suffer from dehydration i had to remind myself to drink double the amounts of fluid i was already intaking... if that makes any since...

The only reason exercise would reduce your milk supply is if you don't get enough water or food. Make sure you hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drink before you are thirsty. Also, even though you want to drop baby weight, make sure you fuel your runs. You need additional calories to support your breast feeding as well as calories to support your running.

I agree with a previous post to try Fenugreek. Oatmeal is also a great thing to keep up your supply (and it is a good exercise food, too)

I was able to run after both of my babies with no decrease to my milk supply.
My advice is to buy a really supportive sports bra (I had to wear two), and to nurse right before you run (if possible).
I drank tons and tons of water and started out really slow, doing the walk-run thing. After my first baby I ran a half marathon a year later (by then I was done nursing) and after my second I did a full-length tri three months after she was born (that was a little crazy, but didn't hurt my milk supply. I nursed for a year.)
I worried a little, but my babies both had plenty of wet diapers.
Good luck! It sounds like every situation is different.

I haven't had any problems with my supply while running. I am training for a marathon and am now up to 25-30 miles each week. My 10 month old is still nursing 5 times a day. I always nurse her before I run and drink lots of water during and after. It is different for everyone, but I wouldn't NOT run because you are nursing. Just pay attention to your body and your baby and I am sure you will be running that 5K with no problems!

i pretty much agree with everyone. lisa hit it right on, i think, by saying the only reason you would lose your milk supply while exercising is because of hydration. i've nursed all 3 of my kids, while training for 1/2 marathons. but i naturally just have a lot of milk, i think. also, i always drink a lot. whether i exercise or not, i can always tell a difference in my milk supply by how much i am hydrating myself.

just see how it goes and good luck!

I ran all while nursing baby #1, and just had baby #2 and haven't had any problems yet. I think the biggest thing for me has been making sure I get enough calories and drink TONS of water. I also try to run right after I nurse my baby...so I don't have as many problems with lactic acid building up. Another big thing is to make sure you have a very good, supportive sports bra. I have an Enelle and it works wonders (especially if you are big bosomed!) Good luck with the running, just listen to your body and you'll be ok. :)

No problems with supply here. I ran a 5k when my son was 2 months and a half marathon when he was 5 months. He got plenty of milk, and got plenty chunky!
