Staying in Running Shape During Pregnancy

My husband and I are trying for baby number #2 now. I ran up until about 6 months during my last pregnancy but didn't have a routine. I just purchased a book on Amazon about running and pregnancy, that I'm excited to read. Do any of you marathon mommies have any advice about staying in shape while growing babies? My goal after baby #2 is to run a sub 1:40 half and then run the California International Marathon. I realize it takes 9 months for a baby to grow so you can't work the weight off overnight, yahta, yahta, yahta, but what can I do to be ahead of the curve?

My friend went through this when she had a baby and has an excellent story I can share.

I only ran for 5 months during my second pregnancy. Then things got a bit too bouncy. :) I did swim though. I swam laps three times a week and it helped me get back into running pretty quickly. My advice is to get back into running nice and slow with the walk/run thing. I did a triathlon just 3 months after having my second and although I was back "in shape" my back was killing me and I was soooo tired. Good luck to you!

Stay far away from dairy products! Animal fat takes a long time to come off. Limit your meat intake to 2-3 times a week. Your weight will drop so fast and you'll feel great! Check out my friends blog, veganmothering.blogspot.com

I'm 7 months pregnant and still running (albeit much shorter distances than pre-pregnancy) so here goes...

1. I really liked the first couple chapters of this book, then found as a runner, the last few chapters weren't that informative with NEW info. It was worth the buy for the first few chapters though.

2. At 5 months (I think), I had to switch to the treadmill from outside, as the pain in my knees got to be too much. After the switch, the pain almost completely went away so be prepared to switch as the treadmill's softer on the joints, and it'll buy you more time running further into your pregnancy.

3. I live and breathe by this thing called the Mom-EZ that I reviewed over at http://www.allthumbsreviews.com/2009/07/pregnant-runners-this-is-for-you.html. A lot of belly bands are just elasticy so don't have much strength to them, but this thing really keeps my belly from bouncing around, so I don't get crampy and my ute doesn't get all insanely tight. I LOVE THIS THING.

I can email you more ideas if you want but this is already a marathon comment so I'll stop:-)

I am new to this...but I just had my second son 6 wks ago. I ran until the day before he was born. With my older son I got back in shape faster.
This time around I am having a hard time. With losing the weight and finding the dang time to run!!!

I am struggling with the balance of two kids, jobs, and my running sanity....
Just keep moving. I also live by the Moms Into fitness videos by Lindsay Brin. They are awesome quick and intense videos. Plus she has a series for each trimester. I did those, ran, and now I am doing a boot camp video...

I ran almost my whole pregnancy. I ran a 1/2 marathon at 6 months and continued running up to 8 months. Although I still gained 56lb, I think running helped me have more energy and I felt like I had an easier time carrying her than I had with my previous 3 pregnancies. Now, she is 8 weeks old, and I am already back up to my 20 miles a week, which is what I was doing when I got pregnant. I still have 30lbs to lose, but I know I will run that off in no time. Just listen to your body, and drink plenty of fluids, and you will be fine. Good luck!
