Track Etiquette

Yesterday was my last track workout, Mile Repeats, in my training for the Portland Marathon. I go to the high school by my house. Since school is back in session I have noticed an increase in the amount of people there, both students and adults. I was so frustrated yesterday as there was a large group of walkers and the were in the first 4 lanes. So, every time I would have to go all the way around them. Really, I just wanted to scream! Does anyone know what the etiquette for the track is. . .or is there one. . .and what would you have done? Thanks!

During our running club sessions at a nearby school track, the suggested "rule" is that the 1st two lanes are for speedwork, the next two lanes are for running/jogging, and the outside lanes are for walkers.

I would agree with Chris. I have heard that walkers should use the outer lanes. That is so frustrating, but congrats on completing your last speed workout, and good luck in Portland!

Any chance of asking if they (track dept) could post signs kindna like how they do for swimming.

because i am a not-so-nice person living on the east coast, i would have definitely asked them to move. you could even explain that the inner two lanes are kept for runners, like chris mentioned. also, a good "on the left" as you approach seems to work nicely.

Good luck in the Portland marathon! Ran it last year and loved the course and the energy.
