Another Turkey Trot!

I also ran a 10K on Thanksgiving morning. Two of my kids ran the 5K and I was one proud mommy. My kids like to run! This is the one thing I know I'm doing right as a mom. ...One more good reason to make myself get up tomorrow morning and face that cold, dark run!

You are such a great Mom! My kids ran a 1 mile fun run last summer and LOVED it! That race was so great for their self confidence!

How often did you get them out to run?

Suggestions taking kids from 1 mile to a 5K?

I dido team Hanni. My little four year old ran his first 1 mile race this fall and loved it. Do your kids run the whole time? I always hope that my kids will run races with me.

Good for you, Sarah. This is great, I've had a lot of questions about this very topic. But can you mothers of little runners back way up. How do you start your kids running? Suggestions for reluctant runners? What age can this begin?

Whoa, whoa, whoa there. My kids do not train. Sometimes they want to go for a little run with me after I come home from a run and we go around the block a couple of times. I wouldn't push running on kids. The last thing I want is for my kids to hate running. They do a school fun run every year and when there is a kids' run associated with a race I'm doing they usually want to do it. What I meant by "doing something right as a mom" is that I know when they see me coming home from a run it is setting a good example for them and it is something they want to try, too. My oldest is 9 and is probably my most reluctant runner. She only decided at the last minute on thanksgiving morning that she wanted to run. Neither of my kids that ran the 5 K ran the entire distance. They run/walk the entire time. I don't know much about when kids can or should start regular training, but I think it should be something they learn to love on their own so they aren't turned off to the idea as they grow up.

Sorry, I didn't think you had them out training or anything. But they must run a little for fun or something, right? I have a just-4 year old and I try to get her to run around a little with me (run to that orange tree, touch it, and come back). Sometimes she's game, sometimes not. I'm just wondering on a very basic level how you get your kids to start running a little? Not on a training-type level. :) Hope that clarifies.

Suzie,

Every time we do a race, my kids will say, "When is it my turn?" There is a lot of racing/running talk at our house. I'm sure that is the case at most of our homes... Anyway, my kids know that they can do 1 mile and my oldest (who is 8) says he now wants to run a 5K. I'm the one who is a little hesitant signing him up. It seems like a big jump for a child. Just curious ..... You are a GREAT example to your kids!

I wish I could have been there. It was so fun when all our kiddos ran the Turkey Trot at the zoo. I hope my kids want to really run with me one day. It is such good one-on-one time. You really are a great example, Sarah.
