Road Block!

I went to my prenatal appointment yesterday and discovered some frustrating news. The pain I have been feeling the past few weeks while running is being caused by my Pubic Symphysis (this is the joint that connects the right and left pubic bones... you know that spot right in the middle of your pubic bone directly under the belly). I told my midwife what was going on and after doing an examination she discovered that this joint is starting to separate. She was very concerned that if I keep running or walking long distances it could completely separate. She insisted that I not run the half marathon. This was devastating news and so frustrating! I want to be safe and not damage my body but man I have a hard time letting go of things. My husband would be the first to agree with this statement.

The good news is that when I rest (meaning stop running for a few days) then it feels better, which means that it can heal enough so I can run the 5K instead. If Connie (my midwife) had it her way I would be done running for the duration of my pregnancy but she agreed that if I can get it healed up then she will allow me to run the 5K. We talked about the way I carry my babies and how that probably has a lot to do with the strain on my Pubic Symphysis and the older you get and the more kids you have the weaker this area gets. I remember feeling it with my last pregnancy but it wasn't until the end of the pregnancy. It is not a good sign to already be feeling pain at 25 weeks. There are so many variables that play a part in running or not being able to run during a pregnancy. I guess this just shows us running mommies that we are all so different and that sometimes we have limitations.

I am so glad that I decided to keep pushing forward with my running during this pregnancy because it has shown me that I am stronger than I thought. I plan to be safe and conservative over the next month because the idea of not being able to run after I have this baby is just not a risk I am willing to take! Thanks for all your support and encouragement. Team Hanni, I hope you start feeling better soon and we can run the 5K together. I will be spinning and swimming over the next few weeks while I heal and will keep you informed on how things go.

I'm sorry. But I'm glad you still might be able to do the 5K.

You're AMAZING! Hang in there!

Hey Roxanne, I am so sorry to hear about this, but I love your attitude! You will definitely be able to run again after the baby, just get the rest you need and hopefully you will be able to run the 5k.

Please keep us updated with your progress. You have inspired so many of us!

No wonder you were in such pain! I can't imagine what that felt like! I'm sure it was a big blow to hear that kind of news. You have had an amazing attitude about all of this. I am so excited to get to do the 5K with you. Get the rest your body needs-

Your belly is too cute!

The greatest things in life come to those who wait...I know how hard it must be to slow down a little...but do what you have to so you can come back even stronger....

I ran until 26 weeks of my most recent pregnancy, then got put on bedrest for three months. I was back out running 2 weeks post-partum and have been going strong ever since. I'm sure you'll do the same. Take it easy so you don't end up with a permanent injury, and enjoy that slow 5K.

Hi Roxie,
I am three months pregnant with my first and Im 37. I just ran/walked a half marathon March 16th. If you can not run it, asked your OB if you can walk it. Grab some friends to do it with you. Having people to talk to makes the time go by faster. Take bathroom breaks and walk slower through the water stops. Races are expensive, and you don't want to sacrifice all that you have done already. As a personal trainer training injury free is very important.Keep me posted! Good luck! Im doing another half next month!
