Help

So here is my first question for all your marathon mommies (first of many) I really need help with my breathing. I feel like my breathing is wearing me out more than it should be. I dont want to be panting. I have heard there are breathing techniques that really help out while running. Do any of you have advice on how I can improve my breathing while running? Thanks ladies!!

Hi Lindsay!! First of all, feel free to ask questions any time. We have all been there and we learn from each other. In my experience the secret with breathing is to slow down. It might feel slower than you would like for your legs, but it will train your heart and your lungs. Over time, your pace will get more comfortable for your legs as you are able to run faster under control. Does that make sense? Of course if you are doing speedwork you will expect your breathing to feel more labored, but for a normal run, you should run at a pace that you can breathe naturally.

Anyone else?

I agree with M&M. I take one big breath in and three short breaths out when I am struggling, it helps me to refocus and calm down a little and for me it works. I know it sounds like lamaze but it works for me!

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds like you're running too fast. I also have major problems breathing this time of year due to allergies and I get exercise-induced asthma. If I use an inhaler, things get a lot better. Not sure if that applies to you, but I thought I'd throw it out there! You could also try interval training in your runs. You would do something like a 1 mile warm up, speed up for 3-5 minutes, recover for 3 minutes and do that three times, then cool down for a mile.

I have a girlfriend who cannot run and breathe at the same time. Seriously! However, I think she's like 1 in a million with that problem. I'm pretty sure you are simply running too fast.

Slow down! You should be running a comfortable, conversational pace. It may feel slow initially but it'll get better as you go.

I agree with amydear...allergies are terrible right now. Frustrating, but take it easy!
