Last Minute Advice?

Okay Mommies, I've got 5 days until I run my first marathon, the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City, Michigan. I'm into the taper, feeling sluggish, and have no confidence. Is it working? : ) What will be most helpful for me to do this last week? I need to keep focused and tell myself I can do it. My allergies have been going crazy, which affects my breathing while I run, so I'm not going for a great time or anything. If all goes well, I think I'll finish under 4:15. But part of me thinks there's no possibility of my being able to make it 26.2 miles. So send good advice and good vibes my way. I'd like to post a good race report when I get home!

Thanks, ladies.

This is so normal to feel sluggish while you are tapering. Your body is used to mileage and doesn't know what to do now that you are cutting back. Mentally you feel like you should be running more, but you are doing the right thing!! Trust your training!! In your run tomorrow, maybe do a few short sprints just to loosen your legs up. Otherwise, keep doing what you're doing. Make sure you are hydrated the last few days before the race and eating a big percentage of your food from carbs.
Keep us posted!! You are going to do great. Whatever happens, you will always remember your first. :-)

This is just normal pre-race jitters, I think. Of COURSE you will finish the race! You've done all the training, right? There is no reason why you won't go out there and kick butt. Drink lots of water over the next few days, get plenty of rest. Prepare mentally by saying "I can do this!" to yourself over and over. Maybe consider picking a word or phrase to say to yourself during the race to remind yourself that you have prepared and you CAN do it. Say things like "I am strong", "I've trained for this!" You can do it! I can't wait to hear all about it.

I have to echo Kelly and Suzie Petunia's remarks.. Staying hydrated is huge, especially for your first one...I would also invest in some body glide for all those unexpected "chafing" spots!

Good luck and try to have fun!

You are going to be amazing!! And I am soooooooooo excited for you. I ran my first marathon in SLC this last month. It is an amazing experience! I wish I would have eaten more the day before the race. I was so nervous I hardly ate and that was a mistake!

YOU WILL FINISH! I promise.

When things got tough during my marathon, I tried not to let my mind get negative, I would say a chant to myself about how I was a marathoner and was mind, body, spirit strong. Positive self talk really works.

I CAN NOT WAIT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE!!!!

I think with every race you will learn something new and find out what works best for you personally. So, just be prepared for a learning experience, the important things are that you have been training and that you will be crossing the finish line!!! Have a goal in mind but I think it is important to make the first run enjoyable and make it a postive experience!

Happy Running! YOU CAN DO IT :)

Just go and enjoy! Don't worry about time. It is your first so just have fun with it. You will finish and it was be such a rush when you do (kinda like the rush you get after giving birth...that "oh my gosh, I really did that' rush. Get a good nights sleep the night before the night before (2 days before). That is the one that really matters. The night before it is really hard to sleep! Enjoy! I am excited to hear all about it:-)
