New Mommy

Hi.  I am a new running mom and I am so excited about it.  Currently I am a biking mommy,  I love my bike with Chariot Trailer for both my babies but I really want to start jogging too... especially with my kids.  I am really trying to lose all my baby weight while having a grand time outdoors.  So this is the beginning of something amazing I think and I am so looking forward to eventually running a 5k all the way to at least a 1/2 marathon.  I would love to run a Marathon.. and is definitely a goal I have but I have to start slow.  This summer my goal is a 10k.

I am the mother of a 2 1/2 year old little girl and a 9 month old son.  My husband is currently a Schwan's Man (yellow ice cream/food trucks?) so needless the say we always have ice cream!  That's good and VERY bad news!  My husband is in school working on an MBA so I have a lot of time to myself.. Running will hopefully help with this..

I am not a runner but I want to be.  I went running for the first time (other than a treadmill) two nights ago and I AM SORE!  I forgot how hard running is!  I will keep going though.. I promise.

My first question.. How often do y'all run?  And for a beginner how often should I run?  I don't want to exhaust myself but I want to push myself.

I look forward to the advice and encouragement.   Thanks.

Welcome, Elle! I am always impressed with those moms that run with a stroller. I could never seem to get into a rhythm. But, you do what works for your family! I think 3 days a week is a great start for a beginner. Just make sure you are going slower than you think you need to and slowly add distance. Try not to add speed and distance in the same run. Only increase one of your runs per week. That is my suggestion! I am so excited to hear about your journey and we are glad to have you on board! I hope you will join the contest to keep you motivated!

I totally agree with m&m's suggestions. When I was just starting, I had it in my mind that once each week I would go 1/4 mile past where I finished the week before. I probably could have done more than that, but pretty quickly I was comfortably running, had figured out a rhythm, and had a steady 3-5 miles going 3 times a week. After that, it became 4 times a week and that felt good. But I didn't start with any races in mind--I just needed some peace and exercise. Running gave me both. (Eventually I figured out about races and stuff and have now done 1 marathon and can't wait to get going on another!) Slow progress is still progress.

Anyway, welcome! I am excited for you to start your running career :)--and to read all about it!

Welcome! When my Husband and I lived in North Dakota I used to LOVE the schwan man...My Mom asked me what I was going to miss when me moved and I told her the schwan man...she thought I was having some kind of inappropriate relationship with another man...I was only having that relationship with the root beer floats...not the actual man!

Anyway, great to have you!
I echo Kelly when she says start with 3 days of running a week, you can always cross train on your off days...increase your mileage or time by 1/4-1/2 a mile or 10 minutes one run a week and go from there...

Good luck and happy running!
