Spinning for Dummies

That is how I felt yesterday when I took my first spinning class at the Y. I thought it would be a nice change, but it was tough! So, this morning I went for what was supposed to be a nice, easy run and I just felt miserable. My buns are a little sore and I just could not get into a rhythm. I guess I will have to stick with running. :-) How about the rest of you? How have you been filling your post marathon time?

I took a spinning class once- my butt hurt so much I never went back!!!
So many people I know love spinning, but I won't do that again by choice.

Come on! You have to stick it through a couple of times to get your butt callused. Kelly you have to give it another couple of tries. I loved having you there yesterday.

I'm with marathon mom...OUCH! :)

And to answer Kelly's question: Once again I've been recovering from illness (what is my problem?!?!) and just barely got back to very short, light running. I start yoga again this weekend. :)

Hey everyone!! Try the spin again!! I actually teach a spinning class or go to one once a week. I was injured a few months ago and had to train by bike (it was winter and indoor pool use too expensive) and was suprised at how well I bounced back when I started running again. As runners we tend to way overuse our hamstrings which can pull our patella to the outside...throw hips out of wack...you know the story. The spin classes, if they're taught well, really encourage you to use your quads (naturally because you're on a bike) but if you've got correct posture and good form from the feet up you use those inner thigh muscles that really just flop around when you run (not really:) That was a very quick annalysis and somebody else could probably be more anatomically correct but... I know that spinning makes me a better runner. I really had to psyche myself into skipping a day of running to cycle but I really think it's worth it! There's my 2 cents!

I agree with trying out different types of exercise. Any trainer or professional you talk to will say how important it is to cross train. Our muscles get bored and a little lazy just doing one thing. They really need to be shocked a little with other types of activity. M&M I know you'll love spinning if you give it another try(or two).

Kirsten- It was fun when the spinning teacher was teasing you! I am sure he is so proud and happy for how well Boston went for you. It was cool meeting the person who has been coaching you! I will not give up yet. But I am not anxious to try again too soon. :-)

Poky girl- I agree with cross training, I am just boring and am a little hooked on running. :-)

I started spinning a few months before I got pregnant and fell in love with it. It is totally different from running and I think running will always be my first love, but I am glad I started. Now that I can't run very much I can spin without any pain. It is totally worth trying out a few more times.

I am a spinning instructor and runner. I love both! You do have to try it a few times before you start to love it! Also, a great teacher makes it better too ;)

I've been doing spinning 2x a week for the past 3 months. At first, I hated it!! But now I crave it and I SWEAR I have seen major changes in my body. I'm not a runner though. Just came across your blog from somewhere. But just wanted to throw my 2 cents in for what it's worth :)

I take a spinning class twice and week and love it. Although, my first class I tought I was going to fall off my bike and pass-out. The second class was only slightly better and now it's my favorite class at the gym.
