Triathlon Newbie

Hey fellow Mommies,

I am branching out...I will be running a sprint triathlon on August 2nd. In true Kelly fashion, I have already printed out the 8 week Hal Higdon Trifast schedule and I am ready to go! I am excited to do something different. (And I am hoping it does different things for my belly flab, like help get rid of it!) I am looking for advice from any of you triathletes. What have you learned? I went on my first bike ride tonight (I should mention I am afraid of bikes...) and I couldn't get my heart rate up very high, but my quads were burning! I am sure I have a lot to learn. I will be going for a swim in the morning. I am sure this whole thing is going to be way out of my comfort zone, but it will be an adventure!

Wish me luck!

Hey Kelly~

I am so right there with you on the out of the comfort zone thing.... I am however afraid of the open water not so much the bike... Keep me posted on how the training is going and any little secrets you learn along the way :)

How fun! Someday I want to try a tri... but now just doesn't seem like the right time. Good job conquering your fear of bikes! That's funny... I fear the water more. :) Good luck in this new adventure!

How fun! I have high hopes to do a sprint tri one day, but I have to get a bike first. Isn't Hal the best? You can always rely on him for a good training schedule. Happy cycling and swimming.

I was way more scared (and still am) about the bike than the swimming or running. Definitely keep yourself hydrated on the biking. I didn't have any water with me on one triathlon and they had no water stations on the bike. I was dying--it really slowed my time down. I also spend a lot of time practicing going from biking to running. For me that is the hardest part. My legs feel like jello when trying to run after biking!! When I did my first one someone told me to take a towel with me and put it on the ground with the rest of my stuff in the bike transition area. That has been the best thing ever. You never know what the area will be like after getting out of the pool--one time I had to run through dirt after swimming so obviously my feet were all muddy-I was able to quickly wipe them off on my towel and get my shoes on. Be sure to share any tricks/tips that you learn along the way. I'm sure you'll do great!
