Freaking Out

Ok, all you amazing moms out there, I need your help. I am freakin' out! So many people have been telling me NOT to train for a marathon b/c I will get injured. Now, after all the times I have denied that this would ever happen to me... it's happening. I could not finish my run Friday morning! I have had a few kinks along the way, achy knees, etc but nothing big so far. I completed my 2nd 20 mile run last Saturday and my right leg was sore at the end, but ok. I stretched alot, took a cold bath, and 2 ibuprofen, I didn't worry. But Wednesday was my 7 mile run and it was hard to ignore the throbbing in my knee. Now my first marathon is only 2 weeks away and I think I might have IT band syndrome. I am not sure yet. Friday morning was awful. After just 1 mile I was in pain. All the problems are on my right side. If I could just chop off my leg I would be fine! It's not just on the outside of my knee though, it's my right hip flexor too. By the end of the 8 miles, (should have been 12) I could barely bend my right leg or lift it at all. I was sort of shuffling just to finish after an hour and 40 minutes. What do I do? I am mentally going berserk here. I am thinking I won't be able to do this marathon, after all this work, training, etc. My training friend says I should take at least a week off, no running at all. It would be so hard to do that at this point. Does anyone have an experience like this? I know I am supposed to be tapering at this point, but to stop training just seems like a crazy decision. What do I do?

You are in your taper anyway... you should take some time off. Take a week off and do some other kind of cardio (bike, swim) to keep you feeling good about your fitness levels (although you can't lose that much training in a week)

I also recommend a foam roller. It SAVED me. I know my IT band was getting jacked up and that foam band worked out some SERIOUS knots. Also, try to get in a good sports massage this week. Don't do it too close to the marathon though (at least 4 or 5 days).

Remember to REST, ICE (ice it several times a day for 15 minutes at a time), COMPRESSION (an Ace bandage seemed to help me a lot) and ELEVATION.

Good luck!! I hope the rest helps you and you get to that start line (and FINISH line) healthy!!!

Good advice from Lisa! Don't worry too much, especially if you've completed 2 20-milers. Take it easy and I hope you're okay! IT band injuries are a pain. Good luck. Hope you are able to run that race in a few weeks and do great!

Thanks for your advice girls. I went to the physical therapist recently and my husband (graduated in Sports Med) massaged it this weekend. I will have to get a foam roller. I have iced it after runs, but not every day. I will do that and the ace bandage (did you wear it all the time, just while running, what?) Has anyone used that brace that is for IT Band? Does it work? Thanks so much for your help- I really appreciate it.

The foam roller saved me. I had IT band problems for a year and no amount of stretching worked. If you roll on it and find the points that are the most sore and just keep it there for 30 sec. 3x you will see dramatic results. I have used it for hip pain too with great results.

I am sorry to hear you are having injuries. Just remember you have put in the time. Your body is ready!! I would definitely rest your legs as much as possible. The last 2 weeks are to get you feeling as fresh as possible for the marathon. You will be great!! I just ran 18 miles after not having run more than 9 miles for 3 months. Your body will remember, I promise!! You might have to run the marathon a little slower than you hoped, but you can do it!! I think cross training is a great idea. Keep us posted and good luck. The rest will probably be very good for your body!

Be careful! I had a friend who had some IT band problems on her 12 mile run right before our first half and she had major main during the run and was not able to run for 6 months after. Just listen to your body. She did say that physical therapy and the foam roller saved her.

Sorry...I meant "major pain." That makes more sense!
