Breaking up is hard to do

Last week I bought new running shoes. Anyone who grew up with me, or knows me at all, knows that I have a very hard time getting new running shoes dirty. I remember in High school during cross-country being extremely frustrated at another teammate for splashing my new shoes during practice. That might explain the reason why I have neglected to wear my new shoes, which I love, outside.

Or maybe it's because of this....

Welcome to break-up, I mean spring in Alaska. This is the road, I mean lake, in front of my house. It spans the entire road as you can see, and makes it prohibitive for me to wear my new running shoes outside without getting them dirty. It's not like I haven't been running outside. I've just chosen to wear my shoes that have no tread and a hole in the side of them instead. I do avoid running when the Fed-Ex man drives through. If you remember what happened last year, I have gotten a little smarter. (For a reminder about my stupidity, click here)

Seriously, would you chance new shoes for this?

This is exactly how I feel about break-up in Alaska. Not to mention today when I woke up. It was snowing. uggh. So for all of you who are running in gorgeous spring like weather, planting your gardens, or picnicking with your families, count your blessings, because I get to be greeted by this.

This is my front yard. No, that's not dirt. It's Volcanic Ash. Not only do we have lakes in our roads, we also have erupting volcanoes. Lovely. Happy Running. Here's to keeping your shoes clean!

Just a side note..for all of you Marathon Mommies running SLC. Good luck and happy running. Wish I was there...seriously.

LOL! Thanks for brightening up my monday! I'm not going to complain about our rainy spring in Portland anymore.

Wow! I thought the weather sucked here. I'm so impressed that you go out in that weather. Keep running, girl.

I will definitely appreciate my surroundings more! I hope things dry up for you soon.

If it makes you feel any better, I am the same way with my shoes!

well i think the grass is always greener on the other side. or the snow is whiter. or something like that. because looking at your pictures makes me jealous. yes, jealous. i love running in the snow.

however, i'm sure if i was there in alaska and it's spring, i'd be ready to run in non-snowy conditions.

i think you're pretty great to run outside in alaska! keep up the good work. :)

i thought i was tough when i ran in alaska because of the bears. but that water is unbelieveable! i will never complain about my slightly damp winter again.

(well, at least until next winter.)

Seriously, I am laughing right now!!!! I can so relate to the whole running shoe thing. I took my NEW shoes to the OR coast for our spring break. They were so beautiful and white! We ended up doing a little hike to one of the light houses and the trail was covered in MUD! I think that I shed a few tears as I trudge thru the muck with my daughter on my back. I really wanted to switch places her. . .let her shoes get dirty!
I can also sympathize with you about the weather. We no longer have snow on the ground but it snowed in our foothills last night. I am SOOOOOO OVER this weather! Bring on the sun. My good weather wishes go out to you. May your summer come quickly!

Wow! Best wishes keeping YOUR running shoes clean. Snow and volcanic ash, eh?

Ooh, I hate wet shoes! Hope your old ones hold out for the outside ones until the weather improves. Is that in July? The ash is crazy! Is it safe once it's on the ground?
