I want to keep my toenails!

Yesterday I ran 15 miles and when I took off one of my shoes it seemed like one of my toenails was loose. Do any of you have any advice on how to keep your toenails? I know that's probably a stupid question, but it doesn't hurt to ask. By the way, I started a personal running blog for those of you that follow each other outside of this blog. (I know there are many of you.) You can find it: here

yeouch! I'm on training for marathon #3 and I've never lost a toenail. I attribute it to buying my shoes 1/2 a size larger, I really think it helps! And GOOD socks! I love balega and wigwam Ironman's.

when i was fitted at a running store by a veteran marathoner she said depending on how far you run your shoes need to be 1/2 to a full size bigger... your feet swell as you run :) there is also a way to tie your shoe to keep the heal in the back of the shoe :)
hope you get to keep your toe nails too! :)

I've tried just about every preventive measure there is to keep from losing my toenals but inevitably it just keeps happening. I've come to view it as a rite of passage for long-distance runners. Yeah, it can be gross and unsightly but it's also a physical mark of my dedication to the sport. I guess I've decided it's more important to be in good shape than it is to have pretty feet!

I am in the same boat as Tall Girl Running. I have tried everything to not loose my toenails...bigger shoes, balega socks...etc. Nothing really stops it...so I've just accepted it and bought alot of toenail polish.

Yeah, I'm already wearing bigger shoes...I don't like everything about myself, but I've always thought I had pretty feet.:) Oh well, I guess I'll just have to say goodbye to the toenails because I'm not ready to quit running.:)

I just think some people are more prone to losing toenails. I lose at least two with every marathon training. My shoes are a full size larger, and it still happens. I've just accepted it. It makes me appreciate when I do have a full set of toenails and a fresh pedicure!

Hi Laura-- I used to have that problem. Lost about 4 toenails until I got a bigger shoe size- one full size larger AND a shoe with a wider toe box. Saucony's are great. I haven't had any problems through all my races. Hope you can keep those feet cute!

Bigger shoes! I lost 3 toenails my first marathon, and now I have yet another getting loose. Bigger shoes helped the most, but I think it's just something that happens. Good luck!
