SI Joint Problems

So back on Labor Day (a while ago)...I ran a 5k! I like to give myself a goal after I have my babies, so I thought a 5k three months after by last little one was a good one. (I ease back into running). My goal was to do 9:00 miles and I ended up averaging 8:52...definitely not a PR but pretty good for three months postpartum I thought. :)

Here I am with my matted hair in all my sweatiness and no makeup after the race. Aren't I beautiful? It was so cute because my husband was waiting with the kids near the finish line to cheer me on. When my little boy saw me pass by, he ran right out after me and started chasing me down. It was really cute. I think he definitely has some future runner potential.

So after doing the 5k, I was hoping to continue building up my times and distances and get back to more of my usual long distance running. But then I had a crummy injury...I locked my SI joint! Have any of you other mommies had experience with that? It has now happened to me twice...after each baby. I know it can be a common injury with female runners...especially after having a baby. I have gone to a physical therapist a few times, and I've been doing some exercises to get it back to normal. I did yoga and other things this time around, hoping it wouldn't happen but it still did.

Any of my fellow running mommies experienced the same problems? How do you deal with injuries and getting back into running? Let me know if you have any advice.

I had SI joint problems when I first started running after having my daughter. I actually ended up with a stress fracture right there (obviously not in the joint itself, but in the pelvic bone right next to it) after my first 1/2 marathon.

My problem is that my SI joint will actually pop out of place. I had to go to physical therapy for a long time (several months) for it after getting that stress fracture. I remember doing lots of sit-up type of exercises (after I actually could again - that was excruciating!), core exercises, leg lifts, etc. After I was done with that I tried to do lots of pilates to strengthen the whole hip and core area. And I also was recommended to see a chiropractor who was able to pop the joint back into place, and eventually I figured out a way to pop it back in on my own. I still have to do this at least once a day. Strange, I know.

I really haven't had any issues with it at all in several years. Sometimes it bugs me when I'm running - I can feel it like it slowly moves out of place, so I stop and try to pop it back into place. Most of the time it pops back into place fine.

I know that's probably not much help. =( I wish I could offer better advice. =(

Wish I could help you with that one. I don't even know what an SI joint (but I'm about to look it up!). Anyway, good job on getting back into running so quickly. Hope you heal quickly!

Melissa,

I think 8:52 postpartum or not is awesome!

And yes, without makeup you are adorable!!

Wish I could help with the SI problem...I haven't even heard of it so now I'm going to have to read up. I hope you heal soon!

Sorry I can't solve your SI issues, but I've found that regular massages are great for preventative measures and recovery.
