Training with a stroller

I've just started running again after baby number 4. It is the first time that I'm training using a jogging stroller, but I won't run with it for the half marathon that I'm wanting to do in the summer. I'm wondering if running with the stroller is going to effect my stride, rhythm etc. and make it harder to run without it for the race. Have any of you done this? Is there anything that I should be aware of when training while pushing 50 lbs of kid and a stroller?

I run with my double stroller a lot! While running with the stroller, I know my form isn't the best but it doesn't seem to effect my form while running without. I think running with the stroller makes me a stronger runner.

certainly my form isn't the best, but on my kid-free running days, whoa! i'm lightning fast. not really, but pretty dang close. because 3/4 of my runs are with the stroller, they do increase my strength and i don't feel my form has suffered. good luck!

My friend was training for the Chicago marathon and ran several of her short and medium runs with a double jogger. Then when she'd run without it, she felt so fast and free! It really made her stronger.

I've seen other parents walk with a stroller, haven't really seen them run with it. I think its great that you are doing it though.

I trained for my first half marathon with most runs with a jogging stroller. I employed the push and catch-up method unless it was a crazy road and then I just ran with one hand holding onto the handlebars. Like the others said when I ran without it, it was awesome! I really felt like it gave me extra strength, especially on the hills! I didn't feel like it interrupted my stride (that depends on the stroller) or rhythm. Although I ran slower miles with it, I felt like my form without it was just fine.
Is it a nice stroller? I think that made a big difference for me. I loved my BOB jogging stroller.

I just ditched my stroller over last winter when I started running early mornings. Trainned for a half marathon pushing my 1 and 3 yr old. Like the others I felt so much faster and stronger when I ran without it during my long runs. I do not think it affected my posture or stride, and I really enjoyed having my kids with me, sometimes we'd made our runs out to the park or the library, even the grocery store. Have fun!

I trained for the SLC marathon pushing my 2 kids in my BOB (which I LOVE!!!) I'd run my long runs without.

It has never affected my stride, and I don't have any unusual aches/pains after.

Like everyone else, when I don't run with it, I'm smokin. Okay, not really, but I have definitely seen an improvement in my time when I train pushing my 2 & 4 year old!! Go for it!!!

I've never run any great distance with my double Bob, just 3-4mi. That's mostly b/c my 3yr old will holler "I wanna get out" the whole time or unbuckle herself and hop out. That said...I have noticed I have a tendency to roll my shoulders forward and hunch over when I run with the stroller. I do better when I do the push and catch-up method like Step said.
