Training Programs

I'm hoping you wise ladies can help me out...is there a specific online training program that you use when training for a race (one that ideally could be printed off). For the past year I have used the one off of runnersworld.com and it has worked fine, but there are a few things that I don't like about it so I'm looking to use a new program....any suggestions?? Thanks so much!! I love reading all the helpful tips and advice you all give, it has helped me so much!!

I've used the FIRST training program from Furman University for the last several years. Trained injury-free so far (except for a piriformis issue caused by pregnancy).

I have always felt like it was easy to use and to follow. It feels like less pressure. Also, it's only running for 3 days a week.

I like Hal Higdon's training programs, he has beginning intermediate and advanced training plans for a variety of races.

Good Luck

I'm also a Hal Higdon fan, although as I've become more experienced, I've tweaked his schedules a little to better adapt to my specific needs. I think his plans are very user-friendly and easy to follow.

I've also done the runner's world smart coach training programs and the FIRST training program. This time around with my marathon training...I'm taking a little bit from some different programs. I like the FIRST program but I went a little over zealous with it and ended up injured when I used it but sometimes I think that other programs don't have exactly what you want either.

I am so excited about this post. I too have used Runnersworld, but there were a few things I didn't like. I'm excited to try some of the other ones.

I highly recommend The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer by David Whitsett, I used the plan in there combined with Hal Higdon's marathon novice program (especially that last few weeks' long runs, including doing 20 miles as our longest run rather than 18 like non-runner's trainer says) to train for my first marathon and had a great experience. It was just enough running to have me prepared and ready but not overworked or overuse injuries. at least for me, the book is totally worth owning and I will use to train for another marathon. It is a good book for varying levels of runners, I don't consider myself a non-runner, but being a busy mom of 2 it was the PERFECT balanced training plan for me (I did end up running a sub-4:00 time, which I was thrilled about!)

I too like Hal Higdon. I started with his novice half marathon and worked all the way through to the advanced. I am now using the novice full marathon plan! he has other distances too! I think his plans are good because they fit in with a busy schedule and use about 4 running days a week usually!

Good luck!
