Warning TMI--Blood in urine

So I know this is really gross, but I just have to ask.  I am marathon training and finished my last 20 miler yesterday.  Considering that I am very slow, this takes me a long time--like 4 hours 12 minutes long.  Anyway, hours after I finished my run, I went to the bathroom for the first time and noticed that my urine was very bloody.  I have had this in the past with a kidney stone, so I figured it was another kidney stone.  My husband told me I should look online to see if dehydration could maybe cause it, and I found some things that really freaked me out that had to do with blood in the urine after running long distances.  Being the paranoid person I am, I ended up getting it checked out, and spent the entire night at the hospital.  Kidneys checked out fine, myoglobin was high but not alarmingly high, etc.  They are just chalking it up to all the jarring around from running causing trauma and bleeding.  Have any of you had this before?  I have done other long runs and never had this problem before.  I am just curious if you have experienced it and what you were told.

Oh my gosh,Kristyn!!! I am so glad you were able to finish another 20, but what a scary way to end it! Good for you for getting checked out. I haven't had this happen before, so I don't have any advice. Rest during your taper and hopefully someone else will have good advice for you!

I'm so sorry; that's scary. Not that I have any knowledge of this at all but I'd say just be sure that your doctor thinks everything is alright. And if they give you the go ahead, trust them. They've been to school for this stuff. :S

Exciting about your first 20 miler! I'm scared just thinking about it. LOL

I am a running mama and a doctor, and it sounds like you had "runner's hematuria", thought to be a benign process as long as it resolves in 24-48 hours. Should be OK!

wow! that sounds serious.
my guess would be dehydration!
my advice would be rest and lots of fluids.

but congrats on finishing 20 miles!!!

That actually happened to my husband once after a 20+ mile long run. We went to the doctor and he said the same thing….. sometimes it just happens after a long run. Everything turned out fine.
Congrats on finishing a long run!

Whenever I train for long runs, I end up with a urinary tract infection. That could be the cause of blood.

Well, truly seeing blood in the urine is very scary experience but I have a friend which is a soccer player told me that sometimes being active in exhausting sports can cause blood in urine.
