Heel Spur??

Hey Marathon Mommies,

I'm hoping someone out there has experienced a heel spur (well, not really, because it's a pain) and can tell me what to do to get it to heal! My left foot has something like plantar fasciitis, but not quite, so I've self-diagnosed it as a heel spur. It used to be just a twinge of pain and discomfort occasionally, but now I can hardly run and often have pain from walking. I am hoping I don't have to take a few months off from running because I am just getting faster and fitter after having a baby. I would like to do a few fall races. Any advice would be appreciated!

Amy

Go to a specialist, not a podiatrist but an orthopedic dr. I can tell you it's most likely Plantar Fasciitis and if you don't treat it now, it will get worse and you won't be able to run for a long time. On my xrays the bone spur is very very tiny BUT it causes me incredible pain.

I would go to a podiatrist or to a sports medicine specialist who is a family practice doctor with a fellowship in sports medicine. If it is a problem that is not likely to require surgery, that could be better than an orthopedic surgeon (orthopods are great, but they are focused on problems with surgical solutions), and the doctor would likely be able to spend a little more time with you suggesting exercises, etc., that would help. I did go to a podiatrist at the recommendation of my M.D. husband when I had plantar fasciitis, and he got me some inserts that have helped a ton. But best to find a podiatrist who is a runner or who has a sports med emphasis.

I thought I had the same problem for a year. I just kept running through the pain. I eventually changed shoes and that made all the difference, no more pain.
