Injured and only 4 days to go til marathon

I have been training to run my first marathon coming up this weekend. I'd been having fun training and reaching each milestone that training for a marathon has and so excited to be reaching the end, all I had left was a 22 miler and then two weeks of tapering! And then it happened, I got injured!  First it was my achilles tendon.   I rested and was able to recover after a week and a half. I was feeling good as new! So I ventured into a useless 15 miler! I had already decided that the 20 miles that I did get in prior to this injury would do for my peek run, all I had to do was taper for two weeks and enjoy the ride, but then for some reason I thought that running 15 miles would be a good idea. GRRR! It was then that I came home with another injury, this time on my peroneal tendon on my OTHER foot (if you pronate outwards that is right about where your peroneal tendon sits) All the Doctor recommended was ice and ibuprofen. It's been a little over a week and I am starting to doubt I will be able to run this marathon, and kind of getting depressed about it. All I have left to try is staying off my foot for the rest of this week, which I have not been doing, I haven't been running, but I still have a house to keep and a husband and two children and a dog to take care of. My husband's being very supporting and has suggested that I stay off  my foot as much as possible this week and hopefully that will speed the recovery and I will be able to run this weekend.

I guess I am posting this hoping that someone will tell me that they too recovered within days of running a marathon and were able to finish strong and well. Please, tell me it is possible!

I dont have that kind of advice for you, but I will pray for quick healing. I too am suffering with achilles issues but my race isn't until Oct.

I understand how bummed you are and pray that you are healed and can race.

Keep your chin up.

I do understand exactly how you feel...The day my last full marathon last fall-I had no idea if I would be able to run it or not...and I was exactly like you-I got injured on my last long run-that I didn't really need...so I was really hard on myself about it.
I'm also running a half marathon this weekend (Probably the same race...SLC?) anyway, I've been having so many problems with my injury (piriformis) that I'm still not sure how I'll even be able to run the half-but I'm just hoping if I show up I'll be able to do it :)
Good luck with the full marathon though...I did the full SLC marathon last year and it wasn't too bad-I hope you'll feel well enough to do it!

I'm so sorry! That is awful. As a runner myself I can understand how frustrating that is. Let us know how it goes. I wish I had amazing advice to give you.

Sarai,

This is a tricky subject because only you can gauge how serious your injury is and how willing and capable you are of running 26.2 miles in mild to severe pain. That said, I can definitely attest to being one of those runners who has gone into a marathon being injured yet still running (and finishing!) a strong race. Physical adrenaline combined with mental willpower is an amazing thing. You just have to be very careful not to cross that line of managing the pain enough to finish the race at the risk of doing permanent damage to your body.

I'm sending all the good vibes I can muster your way! Hopefully come race day you'll be healthy and ready to rumble.

I was training for my first full marathon and wasn't able to run it so I feel you're heartache. That being said...You're race is only a week away. I don't know how bad you're injury is, but if you stay off it, and it feels better, I would sure run it! Good luck!

I guess it isn't that bad if the Doctor's only recommendation was ice and ibuprofen. I have noticed that the pain increases towards the end of the day and the least I walk around the better I feel. I'm new to dealing with injuries so I don't know when I am able to afford to push through it or not before making it worst or even permanent, which I am really scared of doing. Thanks for all your good vibes! It is always nice to know someone is routing for ya, whatever you are! Good vibes your way as well!

Cal: Yes, I am signed up for SLC. Jen, another marathon mommy and I will plan to meet up at the starting line. You are welcome to hang out with us if you'd like, if I am all better by then that is. Drop me a line on my blog if you'd be interested.

So sorry, Sarai! I would just rest as much as possible and give it your best shot. It's very possible that you'll feel well enough to run, or walk, and complete your marathon. But don't be too disappointed if you can't. You're a great runner!

Your race is just a couple of days away, so the only advice I can give is to focus on being healthy, running the race even though you’re injured, and finishing strong. It’s OK that you’re scared of hurting yourself even more on race day, this is completely normal. However, if you focus on the fear and if you think about what you don’t want to happen, then you are increasing the chances of your fear coming true. Imagine yourself running and feeling strong on race day. Yes, you’re injured, but you can still have a great race day! Focus on being healthy and strong. You can do this! Good luck!
