running mantras

The race supporters who stand at the sidelines cheering on their favorite runners are undeniably a great motivator for the folks in the race. I've seen some pretty good signs over the years but my favorite has always been: "Don't Stop: People Are Watching!" I've also started writing a word or phrase on my arm with a Sharpie before the race. It's those little reminders that keep you going when the going gets tough. What are your favorite running mantras?

My favorites, from the marathon I did on Saturday, "Pick up that toenail and RUN!!!" and "Run like you stole something!"

Favorite Mantra:

"Left, Right, Left, Repeat."
"This sounded like a good idea when I signed up"

Favorite Signs:

"Come on honey, I'm hungry" (presumably held by a husband)
and my all time favorite...
"Pain is fear leaving your body"

We are Strong (breathe)! It was my husband's cycling team mantra, but it is great for running too.

My favs -
"If it was easy, everyone would do it."
"Just breathe."

Also, when running long distances, I count the miles up to half way and then count them back down. For example, for a half marathon I count miles 1 - 6, and on mile 7, I start counting back down. It tricks my brain into thinking that running that distance is possible at mile 1 because I only have 5 more to go. Once I get to 6.5, I tell myself I am halfway there. :)
