when you need a new running group...

My family is moving sometime next year.  We will be leaving our small, safe, family-oriented, quiet beach town and moving to Los Angeles.  It's months away, but I'm already a little nervous about it.  I have all kinds of concerns but given that this is a running forum, let's address my running concerns.  WHO WILL I RUN WITH??  Will I find a running group I love as much as the one I'm in now?  Will I find friendly people with similar paces that can run when I can run?  Will it be safe to be outside running around the streets of LA, a city I'm very unfamiliar with...?  Don't get me wrong: I'm very excited about the move.  I'm just sad to be leaving the special friendships we've made behind and I'll miss my running group and our regular 3x a week runs.

When I moved to California 3-1/2 years ago, I searched high and low for someone to run with me.  A few friends were agreeable to joining me for a few runs, but it was never a group until one friend asked me to join a group she had just joined.  Prior to moving I ran with a local running group in Portland and participated in a marathon training program up there.  I also ran with a few girls from my neighborhood.  I don't know why I'm suddenly feeling all this doubt about finding another group to run with.  I already know to check local running stores, online at sites like Meetup, maybe chat with someone also running on the treadmills at the gym...?

Do you run with a group?  How did you find your group?  Have you relocated to an entirely new city and had to find a new group?  Are any of you in LA or know someone who is??

Look for a local running club and see if they have a group you like. If not, why not start your own?

I just goggled Los Angeles Running Clubs and this was the first option: http://www.larunningclub.com/

And there were many more options it looks like.

Good luck. I know it can be tough. After living in my area for 8 years I finally joined the local running club and I have made some great friends. Don't know what I would do without them.

Maybe also, you can set something up with your friends virtually where you check in with them every week or so to see how things are going. That will also keep you accountable.

Again, good luck! Most runners I know are very friendly so it should not be hard to find a group and fit right in.
