Birthday Present in Reverse- A Giveaway!

Since today is my birthday and the launch of the book Train Like a Mother, I thought a perfect way to celebrate the two would be to have a giveaway. The authors of the book, Sarah Bowen Shea and Dimity McDowell have been kind enough to offer 2 books to the readers of Marathon Mommies.

I have been a long time fan of Sarah Bowen Shea and was even lucky enough to test shoes for her as she reviewed shoes for Shape Magazine. (She also contributed many articles to Running World and other publications!) I was excited when she joined with Dimity McDowell to write their first book,  Run Like a Mother and I am looking forward to this next one. They are very eloquent writers who can make you laugh and cry all at once as you read about their running journeys and those of the other mothers'.  I will be going to a reading in Portland on Thursday and get my book then! If you would like a chance to own the book for free, leave a comment on here telling us your favorite training experience, no matter the distance!

I look forward to reading the comments. The contest will end on Friday March 23rd and I will pick the winner randomly on March 24th. Good luck and thanks for reading the blog. We appreciate all your input!

My fav experience was running the Marine Corp Marathon. I was in pain, tired, and just wanted to be done. An old woman ran past me and her shirt said that she finished chemo the week before. Then military men ran by carrying gear of fallen soldiers. Everyone runs for someone even if it's yourself. Nothing helped me focus on the real reason I run like that race.

I was training for my last marathon and my dad came and did an 8 miler with me. I had just had an ectopic pregnancy surgery a few weeks before and was still pretty emotional about losing a baby like that and was discouraged that I was behind on my training as a result of surgery. We started off and I felt so good that I thought I could go another few miles! So encouraging and helpful to have the added support of my dad during that time.

Training for the DC RnR half marathon. I got back to running 5.5 weeks after having my second baby. I was overweight, out of shape and less than confident that I could run 13.1 miles. However, every time I got out on the road or into my spinning class, I felt better than the last time. I cherished the time alone - no work, no babies, no chores, no responsibilities. My best run was an 11 miler that took me to the National Mall and back home. It was a wonderful run, which I negative split.

I PRed the 1/2 last Saturday and am now dreaming up goals and races that I would not have thought possible last year when I was 3 months pregnant.

My favorite training moment was on my first 10 mile run. I had signed up for a 1/2 marathon with just 2 weeks to go. I hadn't run further than 7 miles but I had been training in other ways and on a whim signed up for a race. Since I hadn't followed a training plan I had the goal to have done at least a 10 mile run before the race. I left on a beautiful weekend morning and my hubby met me at a couple of points for refueling. But I was so proud of myself when I finished those 10 miles. I remember feeling like I could do anything in the world if I had done this 10 mile run. That training run trained me for the upcoming 5 1/2 marathons that I ran in the following months.

Sheez...typing this out I am remembering why I love running. I need to get back at it! :)

I have only run one marathon, St. George 2011. I trained with a friend, but I ran with my sister. She ran with me the whole way, even though she could have done a lot better without me. I know that I made it to the end because of her!

My favorite running experience is every time that my family comes along. My husband usually runs with the dog and both boys (6 and 4) ride their bikes. We don't make it very far on those runs and they are pretty slow, but we have a blast!
